About the Founder and Director Dr. Laura Gambrel
Welcome — I'm glad you're here!
I am a couples therapist, clinical supervisor, mindfulness instructor, researcher, speaker, and trainer with over twenty years of experience supporting individuals, couples, families, and communities — both across the United States and internationally. My work has taken me from the Dominican Republic, where I served as a Peace Corps volunteer, to university classrooms, counseling centers, community mental health, and therapy rooms across the country. That range of experience has shaped my deep belief that healing is always always relational.
I bring a rare combination of clinical depth, academic rigor, and embodied warmth to everything I do. My approach is integrative — grounded in Emotionally Focused Therapy, relational mindfulness, and attachment theory, with a strong feminist, anti-oppression, and socio-cultural lens. I am LGBTIQ+-affirming in practice and in orientation, and I work with couples and families of all configurations.
What drives my work is a fundamental conviction: that insight alone is rarely enough. Real change happens in the body, in the nervous system, and in the space between people — and that is where I focus.
As a therapist, I specialize in couples therapy, the transition to parenthood, and supporting helping professionals navigating burnout, compassion fatigue, and moral injury. I am one of few ICEEFT-certified Emotionally Focused Couples Therapists in Western Washington, trained in the Gottman Method, and the creator of the evidence-based Mindful Transition to Parenthood Program — developed through years of study, clinical work, and research on what new parent couples actually need. I pay close attention to mental load, gendered dynamics, and the ways larger systems shape our most intimate relationships.
As a supervisor and trainer, I bring ten years of university faculty experience in two COAMFTE-accredited Marriage and Family Therapy programs — at Appalachian State University and La Salle University — as well as experience as a former Clinical Director at Inside Passage Counseling overseeing training, supervision, and clinical quality. My supervision is relationally deep, socio-culturally attuned, and grounded in self-of-the-therapist work. I help therapists grow not just in clinical skill, but in the kind of embodied, identity-aware presence that makes the real difference in the room. My background as a Registered Play Therapist and sandtray practitioner also informs the experiential, creative, and somatic dimensions I bring to supervision and training. I am available for individual and group supervision, as well as training, consultation, and speaking engagements.
A little about me personally: My husband and I have been together for twenty years and have three children, including twins — which means I have lived experience of "three under three," the beautiful chaos of raising multiples, and the very real challenges of dual-career partnership and involved parenting.
I am based in Bellingham, Washington and offer a range of virtual services to clients, supervisees, and organizations around the world.
If something here resonates — whether you're looking for therapy, supervision, or training — I'd love to connect. Reach out for a free consultation and let's see if we're a good fit.
